A Message from the Counseling Psychology (MA) Program

Welcome from the Program Director <back to top>

Welcome to MSPP! I am delighted that you have chosen to pursue your graduate studies with us. You have made a very good choice: not only are you embarking on a career that is challenging, intellectually stimulating, and deeply rewarding, you are putting yourselves on the path to join one of the fastest growing mental health service professions in the United States. At a time when, sadly, many other occupations are shrinking, the field of mental health counseling is expected to experience a job growth rate of up to 30% between now and the year 2016. Opportunities in counseling with individuals involved with the criminal justice system are also increasing as well, and there is a great need for mental health counselors with specialized training with forensic populations. We will prepare you for these opportunities by providing a hands-on, experiential education anchored in a state-of-the-art curriculum delivered by a practitioner faculty in the context of a model that actively integrates theory with practice. In our classrooms and field sites, you will learn the fundamentals of counseling and clinical work within an ethical framework. You will be exposed to the many facets of diversity and cultural competence, and you will learn to apply your classroom knowledge to the realities of everyday practice. You will learn how to be a consumer of scientific research to guide you in choosing the best practices to guide your assessments and interventions. Above all, you will learn how to listen to persons in distress – and how to respond to them in such a manner as to help them overcome their difficulties and get the most out of their lives. You will learn the essence of caring.

On behalf of the Forensic & Counseling faculty, I welcome you to our program and our school. We are excited to be part of your professional journey.
