Commencement Speaker
The Commencement Speaker for this year’s ceremony is David Satcher, MD, PhD. Dr. Satcher is the 16th Surgeon General of the United States.
Students of mental health disparities will know his seminal work: Mental Health A Report of the Surgeon General. Dr. Satcher was the first Surgeon General to call attention to Mental Health, Disparities in Mental Health Care and the critical need for child psychotherapists and school psychologists. The Reports that he authored on these topics have been some of them most important and useful works of clinical scholarship in mental health. It is a great honor to have him address the graduates, faculty, staff and friends. In addition to being the Commencement Speaker, Dr. Satcher will be awarded the MSPP Doctor of Humane Letters degree. This is the highest award that a school can bestow and it is awarded for distinguished, lifetime contributions of service, scholarship and professional work by individuals of exceptional character. In addition to Dr. Satcher, this degree will also be awarded to Mayor Thomas Menino, Dr. Hortensia Amaro and Trustee Richard (Rif) Freedman.
The leadership, service and scholarship qualities of our degree recipients are more than can be written about here. Mr. Menino has been elected five times as Mayor of Boson and he has served the Boston community for most of his life. His humane leadership and commitment to supporting and developing the neighborhoods of Boston has been extraordinary. Many in the city credit him with single handedly extending access to critical health care services to the poor. Dr. Hortensia Amaro is among the nation’s premiere social science researchers. Her clinical research has brought innovative care to women with substance abuse and persons with HIV/AIDS. The MOM’s and Entre Familia projects in Boston support young mothers with their children, while they all go through rehabilitation for substance abuse. Rif Freedman has served on the Board of Trustees at MSPP for more than a dozen years. He has been an indispensable counselor, business consultant and financial advisor. His presence on the Board during very difficult financial times has been stabilizing and affirming. In addition to his work on the Board, Rif and his wife Joan are committed to child development and primary prevention. They have shown particular leadership and generosity in their support of the Freedman Center for Child and Family Development.
