Advising Second Year Students

Fall Semester
General collaborative contact regarding overall program experience, satisfaction, growth and program review. These should be joint "check-in” meetings to sustain an ongoing advisor-advisee relationship.

Spring Semester
Your participation will be needed at the beginning of the spring term for the Internship Readiness Procedure, a process established to provide a programmatic review by an Internship Readiness Committee (IRC) of all current second year students’ academic and clinical work before certifying their readiness to proceed to the internship level of training. The Dean of the Doctoral Program will forward a summary sheet requesting data on coursework, field evaluations, the A & P evaluation from first year, and the advisor’s judgment on whether the advisee has all the necessary information to complete the summary form. Carefully review the student’s file before making this determination. In most cases the advisee is doing well and this is an opportunity to formally validate the progress. If there are reasons that the advisee is not yet ready for internship, the advisor must assume the evaluative responsibility of identifying and addressing this with the advisee. One should not avoid this and assume IRC is the sole source of critical feedback to the student. If the advisor has been actively involved in assessing the evaluation and feedback a student has received from all programmatic sources, a critical recommendation short of full approval for internship readiness should not come as a surprise to the advisee.

  • Monitor course and field evaluation reports; assigning credit for the practicum experience.
  • Convene an intermediate A & P if needed.
  • Hold the pre-A & P and A & P in the spring. Be mindful of the tasks of a second year student. Consider the growing impact from the scope of the work, the stressors, the deepening involvement with psychological theory and practice, and the costs in time from personal /family life.
  • Advise and consult regarding a beginning Internship search.
  • Note: second year students are required to attend at least two Doctoral Project Colloquia prior to enrolling in the Doctoral Project 1 course in Fall of year 3.
