Advising Students in the Doctoral Program
In principle, advising at MSPP should be more focused on professional growth and career aspirations than on the technicalities of routine requirements such as registration. Good advising, good mentoring, and good supervision are among the integral and significant building blocks of sound professional career building.
General Responsibilities:
- Meeting routinely and regularly with advisees
- Overall program planning
- Consulting on Practicum and Internship site searches
- Reading student evaluations
- Reviewing and approving registration forms
- Assigning credit for practica and internships
- Chairing Assessment and Planning (A & P) conferences
- Convening Intermediate A & P conferences when needed
- Providing appropriate evaluative (positive or negative) information to the advisee
- Sustaining an evaluative role with the advisee
- Monitoring probationary or remedial recommendations for students in academic difficulty
(If you are a new advisor there will be an orientation to advising provided by the Office of The Dean of Students.)
