Advising Directed Studies

Directed Study course options are designed to help meet individual student’s needs and goals by allowing for creative learning opportunities beyond those offered in the MSPP curriculum.  The student and advisor determine whether a directed study idea is suitable to a student’s curricular and professional goals, and the advisor must make such a recommendation for approval based on this and on criteria detailed in the Policy and Procedures Manual. A Directed Study must then be approved by the Directed Study Review Board following submission of a Directed Study Request Form to the Registrar’s Office.  Again, the advisor should not use the Board to avoid taking a critical stance on the appropriateness of a student’s request in terms of overall academic planning or the rigor of how a course may be structured.
