Advisor Assignment and Change
Advising assignments are made following the conclusion of the Admissions process. Advisors are assigned by the Dean of the Doctoral program, in consultation with the Dean of Students, based on advisor availability and on the recommendations made by admissions teams and the Directors of Training. Students admitted in special status programs (e.g. Advanced Standing, Re-specialization) may be assigned to advisors who specialize in individualized programming.
Generally, students retain the same advisor throughout the program. However, either the student or the advisor may initiate a change without prejudice (but not without review) if, during the course of the relationship a change is deemed desirable or necessary. The student and the current advisor are required to meet and discuss the potential for a change and to consult with the Dean of Students to initiate the process. In this consultation a student may identify a particular faculty member as a choice for a new advisor. If the advisor, advisee and the Dean of Students agree that a change seems advisable, a request is made of the Dean of the Doctoral Program, who must be consulted regarding the availability of the requested faculty member. Final approval of all advising changes rests with the Dean of the Doctoral Program and is authorized for the next academic year. Petition for Change of Faculty Advisor forms are available in the form boxes in the Main Office.
