Q: What is the ARC for Students at MSPP?
A: The ARC is the Academic Resource Center for Students at MSPP, which offers assistance to graduate students experiencing difficulty with writing and other academic tasks.
Q: Am I eligible for assistance at the ARC?
A: Anyone who experiences difficulty with writing and other academic tasks (e.g. organization of language and thought; efficient study methods) can receive assistance through the ARC. Students who have a diagnosed disability and require reasonable accommodations (e.g., extended time and/or a distraction-free space for an in-class exam) must contact Dr. Jane Adelizzi (jane_adelizzi@mspp.edu), Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the ARC, prior to receiving accommodations specific to their disability (www.mspp.edu/student-life/student-disability-policy.asp).

More About the ARC
MSPP continues to offer graduate students assistance in writing papers much as it has for a number of years, previous to the development of The Academic Resource Center for Students at MSPP (ARC). Students who seek assistance of this nature may be self-referred, or referred by the Dean or Associate Dean of Students, Advisors, Student Services or faculty members.
Some students who receive assistance from the ARC find that their difficulties in managing an increased reading load in conjunction with writing papers on a graduate level is daunting, not to mention overwhelming at times. These may be students whose difficulties are addressed through practice and remediation, under the guidance of a trained tutor. This specific population of students may find that their needs are being met, and that they are able to move through their graduate studies with assistance on an “as-needed” basis.
There are other students who arrive at MSPP with a previously diagnosed learning or attentional disorder. Some of these students will seek academic assistance for written assignments, as well as reasonable accommodations, such as extended time or a distraction-free space for an in-class exam. Students seeking reasonable accommodations must contact the Assistant Dean of Students & Director of the Academic Resource Center, Dr. Jane Utley Adelizzi (Jane_Adelizzi@mspp.edu).
The scope of assistance available to students at the ARC includes:
- General editing;
- Organization of language and thought in written assignments;
- Lexical proficiency (learning and using the language/meaning of a course, program, or profession);
- Efficient reading and study methods;
- Greater understanding of executive functioning skills in relation to academic success (e.g., meeting deadlines, planning, organizing, initiating & sustaining tasks); and
- Rehearsals for classroom presentations.
- Reading and scribing services are not available at the ARC
Each time you have a scheduled session with your tutor, please remember to bring the following:
- The syllabus and description of the assignment or task for which you are seeking assistance;
- Reading material that is pertinent to the above; and
- A willingness to engage in discussion about the material and the imposed expectations that lead to a successful outcome.
