FY2013 Budget Update: Train vets to Treat Vets
Governor Deval Patrick has submitted his Fiscal Year 2013 budget proposal to the House of Representatives. This budget proposes a net increase of 13% in services to veterans via the MA Department of Veterans Services (DVS), and includes a continued $125,000 in funding for the Train Vets to Treat Vets program at the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP). This funding supports a behavioral health career development program for returning veterans.
This highly successful program was rolled out in July, 2011, and by the 6 month mark, had delivered 894 hours of direct counseling services to area veterans at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, the Veteran Northeast Outreach Center and the Jamaica Plain and Bedford VA. In addition TVTV student ambassadors also visited four area schools and one national convention, informing 58 veterans about careers in mental health; these efforts resulted in 39 inquiries and 6 applications. The TVTV program at MSPP is now gearing up for a conference on May 18th, at Veteran’s Inc. in Shrewsbury, entitled “Beyond Thank you for your service”: Meeting the Needs of Returning Veterans and Their Families .” This conference invites mental health professional to acquire evidence-based skills and knowledge that will help them meet the unique mental health needs of returning veterans.
