Although it has been more than 4.5 years since the devastation of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, many communities throughout the Gulf Coast are continuing to rebuild and recover. MSPP CARE (Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology: Communities Assisting Relief Efforts) is a student-initiated group with a commitment to civic outreach and community service. For the past 3 years MSPP CARE has traveled to the heart of New Orleans, LA to join ongoing community building and relief efforts. While MSPP CARE’s primary mission has been to provide aid and outreach to individuals and communities in need, members have found these immersion ventures to be personally and professionally enriching. Inevitably, with each trip students are moved by the strength, hope, courage and honesty of New Orleans residents, and feel that this experience enables them to become better future mental health professionals.
