Chow Hall—11:00 am – 1:00 pm
MSPP student vets will be serving MRE's ("Meals Ready to Eat") giving students and staff the opportunity to see what our military eat out in the field. Participants will also have the opportunity to try on military defensive armor to get a small sense of how it feels to carry the extra weight.
Film "Taking Chance"—5:30 – 8:00 pm, Classroom 10.
Student veterans will lead a discussion after the showing of the film.
In April 2004, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl, USMC, came across the name of 19-year-old Lance Corporal Chance Phelps, a young Marine who had been killed by hostile fire in Al Anbar Province, Iraq. Strobl, a Desert Storm veteran with 17 years of military service, requested that he be assigned for military escort duty to accompany Chance's remains to his family in Dubois, Wyo.
Witnessing the spontaneous outpouring of support and respect for the fallen Marine - from the groundskeepers he passed along the road to the cargo handlers at the airport - Strobl was moved to capture the experience in his personal journal, writing Taking Chance.
'Taking Chance' chronicles one of the silent, virtually unseen journeys that takes place every day across the country, bearing witness to the fallen and all those who, literally and figuratively, carry them home. A uniquely non-political film about the war in Iraq, the film pays tribute to all of the men and women who have given their lives in military service as well as their families.

Adopt-a-troop
MSPP will launch the "adopt-a-troop" program this month. By working with one of our students who is an active reservist, we have been able to get names of active military who could benefit from personalized care packages put together by MSPP volunteers. We will be "adopting" someone every month including those who may be part of the MSPP family through relatives and friends.

"After entering & serving in the military, I came back and returned to school at Rutgers University where I took a history class on Vietnam War Films. I was watching a film called Hamburger Hill, and there was a scene where the soldiers were talking, and all of a sudden it just clicked with me."

"I served in the army for three years, from 2003 to 2006. I was in a combat unit, and although I didn’t go to Iraq, I had the privilege of meeting soldiers who eventually became like family. I realized that some of them had issues involving things that they had seen in combat that really affected them, and in turn, affected the unit."
