Office of Multicultural Affairs Recognizes LGBT Pride Month 2013

PRIDE

This year Boston Pride celebrated LGBTQ consciousness with the theme "Moving Forward…Proud, Strong, United"! This year MSPP's Rainbow Alliance partnered with Fenway Health to show our pride and support!

"We had a small, but proud group marching, comprised of two faculty, two students, and one new graduate. A fun time was had by all, and we hope to get a bigger group together next year!"

Jessica Garcia"Well, my Pride experience was an interesting one. Mostly because this was my first Pride in Boston! I got to meet so many wonderful people and I had a wonderful time. Being a member of the LGBTQA community gave me a great sense of duty and purpose to march; in memory of Stonewall and all those activists that fought for sexual and gender equality before me. As a friend of mine described it, 'Going to Pride is like getting a big hug. You feel so held, accepted, and loved.' She was right. I loved every minute of it! So I guess that now you could say that I am Boston Strong AND Boston Proud!"

"My work with LGBTQ populations helped me see first hand how few culturally competent resources were accessible to them. I heard stories about families struggling with everyday stressors or mental health issues that sought treatment from mental health professionals and were met with homophobia, transphobia, or just a lack of understanding about how their families worked. This fueled my desire to become a psychologist with a goal to one day serve these families. Currently, my doctoral project is going to explore resiliency traits in Lesbian and Gay parents. I hope to be able to add to the growing literature that shows the competence and resilience of these families."

LGBTQ families and Resiliency

"The current body of research that looks at LGBTQ resilience is growing, but still small. Most of what I have found shows that due to the increased stressors placed on Lesbian & Gay families due to homophobia and oppression, these families employ resiliency in order to thrive at the level they do. Some research has suggested that Lesbian & Gay families may be more resilient because of their adaptability and flexibility due to the lack of gender role restrictions."

Recently the Atlantic published an article relating to this area. One quote that I particularly find interesting is 'Gay marriage can function as a controlled experiment, helping us see which aspects of marital difficulty are truly rooted in gender and which are not.' Hopefully in understanding what makes these relationships, and in turn their families, so strong and resilient can help us as mental health clinicians work to make all families, no matter what form they take, the strongest they can be."

We are changing attitudes and policies to ensure that all families are respected, loved, and celebrated—including families with parents who are LGBT. We are a community of parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren that reaches across this country. For 30 years we have raised our children and raised our voices toward fairness for all families."
