My name is Kara Yingling. I am a second year Master’s student in the Forensic and Counseling Program. I am originally from Ohio where I attended The Ohio State University. I double majored in Psychology and Criminology, which is where I found my passion for the field of Psychology. I found MSPP by chance, exploring APA’s website for accredited counseling programs with an interest in Forensic populations. After I informally visited MSPP, I knew it was the school I wanted to attend. With its small community, experienced and knowledgeable faculty, I knew it was a place I would not only gain an immense amount of knowledge and experience, it was also I place I knew would challenge me.

As I begin my second year, I have never been more certain choosing MSPP was the best decision I could have made. The experience I have gained, relationships made with my fellow classmates and faculty, and the openness of the MSPP community has allowed me to gain confidence as I enter my second year internship at DYS.

Although I have not decided what my future career goals will be, I do hope to work with adolescents who have been incarcerated. My first year practicum at Y.O.U. Inc in the In Home Behavioral Therapy Services, and my current internship at DYS have solidified my desire to work with adolescents who have been involved in the legal system.

My advice to all the entering MSPP students is to be prepared for a big adjustment, but to enjoy it. There is a lot of reading, but when you are passionate about a field you are entering, it doesn’t seem to be as much work because the topics are exciting and interesting! My main advice would be to budget your time, and always make some time for yourself! My first year flew by, but the experience, knowledge, and relationships I have gained are invaluable!
