Organizational Psychology

I was attracted to Organizational Psychology as a way to make a positive difference in people’s lives. People can spend 40+ hours a week at work, and a negative environment can carry into other elements of their lives. I worked for a company where I loved my job, but I dreaded going into work. Everyone who worked there echoed the same sentiment. I was frustrated that I didn’t know how to improve the situation. While visiting the Idealist College Fair to research Social Work programs as a means of becoming an Employee Assistance Program counselor, I discovered the Organizational Psychology program at MSPP and it all clicked. The program tied together my love of social psychology and my desire to improve the workplace.

A key factor in choosing a graduate program for me was to be able to continue working at my current job while earning my degree. The blended program format of the Organizational Psychology program at MSPP was ideal for me. The cohort model was great, and the friendships I formed truly helped me throughout the program, and afterwards. Furthermore, the faculty and alumnae are great resources. The professors are supportive and accessible. As alumnae, there are opportunities to become involved with the Organizational Psychology and Leadership Alumnae group. They provide additional chances for professional development and networking, which is engaging, encouraging, and energizing.

It was important for me during the program to still take some time for myself (and everyone will tell you that, but seriously it’s important). While I was busy with schoolwork and my full-time employment, I still managed to take time and learn American Sign Language at MSPP and continue my volunteering at the Museum of Fine Arts. My parting advice is: figure out what works best for you. For me, I know that I study best outside of my apartment, so I quickly became a fixture at local coffee shops (let me know if you ever need a recommendation on the best coffee shops in Cambridge). Since everyone approaches things differently, it’s important to figure out your style. Best of luck, and enjoy the journey!
