MSPP Student Ambassador
Montclair State University
2nd Year Clinical PsyD
My name is Andrea Bedoya and I am a 2nd year student in the Clinical PsyD program. I was born and raised in Colombia. I completed a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and a Master's Degree in Clinical Psychology for Spanish-English Bilinguals at Montclair State University in New Jersey. I moved to Massachusetts to attend MSPP.
I became interested in MSPP for two main reasons. First, I was attracted to the program's philosophy of combining theory and practice since the first year in order to achieve the best training. I knew my learning style required hands-on experiences and was excited to know that I would have the opportunity to do therapeutic work from year one. Second, I was captivated by the program's emphasis on multiculturalism and diversity, as well as its commitment for meeting social need. I became particularly interested in the Latino Mental Health Program because I considered it to be an excellent match to my career goals.
Major themes in my first year of training included self-awareness, self-reflection, and the development of strong therapeutic relationships with clients. The focus of the second year has been on the different theoretical perspectives in psychology and their application. I have learned a lot from coursework, as well as from my practicum, a community health center where I provide mental health services to Latinos. The more I learn however, the more I discover how much I don't know. The journey is both challenging and exciting.
To new students I recommend taking advantage of all the support provided by the MSPP community. Among other things, this includes assistance with writing and other academic tasks, self-care activities (e.g., free yoga and meditation classes), and guidance from professors, advisors, and fourth year students. Though the experience of being in graduate school can be a little frightening at the beginning, learning to benefit from the services the school provides will ensure you a successful experience.
