My name is Aftan Barber. I am a Masters student in the Forensic and Counseling Psychology program. I moved from Memphis, Tennessee to become apart of the MSPP community. I chose MSPP because of its small community that offers individual attention. I also chose MSPP because it was important for me to be trained by faculty members who are involved in careers fields that I hope to enter. I find it beneficial to be learning from practitioners who are currently in the field.
I am a member of the Student Coordinating Committee. I serve as a second year forensic and counseling representative. I also tutor inner city youth at a middle school.
My career interests include starting a preventative program designed for adolescents who are at risk of heading down a path of crime. I also plan to conduct forensic evaluations such as competency to stand trial and sanity evaluations.
I would advise incoming students to be open and ready to learn. I would also encourage them to take advantage of the opportunities that MSPP provides like the continuing education programs and the events that the different organizations host. You will be a better counselor for it.
