ST 631—School and Family Systems
3 credits
This course examines the two systems that most impact the work of school psychologists: families and school systems. Strength-based principles and methods are emphasized. Students are introduced to principles of family development and models of family therapy, and how factors of race, gender, sexual preference, ethnicity and socioeconomic status affect therapeutic interactions with families. The study of family systems also covers home-school collaboration, parent education and counseling, and other ways to engage families in support of students’ educational needs. The study of school systems is explored within the context of organizational theories and interpersonal dynamics. This material is applied towards understanding how to plan and implement new programs and services, and bringing about changes in professional practices and educational reforms. Special attention is devoted to school-wide and school-community programs to promote social-emotional learning and pro-social behavior.
