CX 610—Counseling and Psychotherapy in the Schools

This course explores the therapeutic issues involved in counseling, play therapy, and other therapeutic work with schoolchildren and their families. Topics include framing the relationship and establishing rapport, defining boundaries, confidentiality and its limits (e.g., mandated reporting), ethical responsibilities, relationships with social services and other providers, transference and counter-transference, influence of social and cultural issues, symptoms and their meaning, and how therapeutic interactions and relationships with families effect change. Supervised experience in counseling of individual students is arranged through the concurrent Practicum III.
