Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the PsyD degree?

A: PsyD is short for "Doctor of Psychology." This degree program trains students to be practicing clinicians. It includes  foundation courses in psychology as well as applied training. Students pursuing a PsyD degree are more likely to be interested in developing strong clinical skills, with the goal of becoming direct psychological service providers. The use of empirically-supported assessments and intervention techniques is emphasized, as well as a focus on outcome assessment. Although not designed to produce researchers, students in the PsyD program are taught to be educated consumers of research. To reach this goal, students receive both academic training as well as experience in understanding statistics and undertaking research.
