Q: What is Forensic Psychology?

A: Forensic Psychology is a rapidly growing specialized area of psychology that applies psychological theory, skills and field training with a specialized understanding of the criminal and legal systems.


Q: What types of individuals are drawn to the MA Program in Forensic Psychology?

A: The Masters of Arts in Forensic Psychology at MSPP combines online courses with monthly weekend seminars.   The flexibility of such a program appeals to both the recent college graduate and working professional.  Accordingly, because the range of human needs and current obligations is quite diverse, the field attracts people at different levels of education and training, allowing richness to the overall training experience.


Q: What types of field placement settings are available?

A: Students are placed in such settings as district, family/probate courts (e.g., juvenile or adult court clinics, etc.), psychiatric hospitals, forensic assessment and treatment centers, and correctional facilities.


Q: What student supports are provided for students?

A: In addition to online virtual office hours, faculty will be available by telephone, email, or in person.  Faculty will also be on-site during the once-per-month weekend seminars.


Q: Where do forensically-trained Mental Health Counselors work?

A: There is an array of setting open to our graduates.  Such settings include court mental health clinics, child advocacy centers, correctional facilities, educational settings, and private practice.


Q: What degree or certificate does a graduate earns?

A: The successful student earns a Masters of Arts in Forensic Psychology with the educational requirements needed to practice as a licensed Mental Health Counselor.


Q: How long does the Program take to complete?

A: The Masters of Arts in Forensic Psychology is a full-time two year  60-credit program with course loads of 15 credits per semester.  Each year students will develop forensic psychology skills and knowledge as well as actual forensic psychology field training.


Q: Beyond course work and field placement, are there any other requirements needed to earn the degree?

A: Yes. In order to ensure that our graduates are competent and likely to be sought out by potential employers, each student will be required to complete a 20-30 page thesis and pass a comprehensive examination before meeting all the requirements for the Masters Degree in Forensic Psychology.


Q: When Do I apply?

A: MSPP is now accepting application for admission for the Fall 2008 semester.  We will have rolling admission on a space availability basis.
