SN 512—Children & Adolescents with Special Needs
This course provides an overview of programs and services for students with learning and behavior difficulties that require special education, Section 504 accommodations and/or other special services. It provides an introduction to characteristics and educational needs of children and adolescents with high incidence disabilities (i.e., learning disabilities, intellectual impairment, emotional and behavioral disorders, and speech and language impairment). Historical developments, legal mandates, and research are examined for an understanding of how they have shaped current practices. Particular attention is devoted to (1) issues and methods for establishing positive relationships with families, and (2) alternative service delivery systems (e.g., collaborative problem-solving).
