Description: Parents of children with substantial disabilities will have intensive, emotionally-laden interactions with school personnel over an extended period of time. The course of the school-family relationship is set in motion when school personnel first diagnose and report on a serious disability. Communicating effectively and empathically with parents of children with special needs is critical to the education success of children with special needs. It will determine whether school resources-staff time and energy in particular-are invested productively, or in adversarial interactions. School psychologists and other education professionals are well served by learning advanced skills and specialized techniques in conducting conferences with parents. An invaluable skills is how to deliver difficult and upsetting diagnostic news to parents. When effectively done, a collaborative relationship between parents and the educational team can evolve that is in the best interest of parents, professionals, and children with special needs. The program will focus on specific communication techniques that facilitate effective collaboration
