Schools Have Disabilities Too: Understanding Universal Design for Learning

Date: Friday, September 12, 2008
Time: 9:00 am – 12:00 pm
Program No: SP36
CE Credits: 3
Tuition: $65.00
Instructor: David Rose, EdD
Location: MSPP
Description: Schools devote enormous professional time and resources to individual students with disabilities and learning. In particular, in their efforts to successfully include students with disabilities in general education and to support underachieving students without relying on special education. Universal design for learning (UDL) is a powerful approach that addresses both of these priorities by adapting learning environments and curricula to meet the needs of all learners. This program will highlight the most common ‘handicaps’ in learning materials that limit the ability to meet the challenge of teaching every student. The session will address new technologies and new learning sciences for creating -universally designed- curricula that result in fewer barriers and more opportunities for success across the full range of students, including students with learning disabilities. Both UDL and the National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard (NIMAS), a key component of UDL, have been included in IDEA 2004 and are certain to see rapidly increasing adoption in the near future. David Rose and his colleagues at CAST have been at the forefront in developing UDL and NIMAS technology and policy in the United States.
