| Description: |
All patients come to therapy to alleviate their suffering. However, clinical and scientific evidence suggests that ‘what we resist, persists,’ or even amplifies. The challenge of psychotherapy is how to turn toward emotional pain, safely and effectively, together with our clients. Three core skills of mindfulness meditation can be cultivated to support this tricky endeavor: (1) single-focus awareness, (2) open-field awareness, and (3) compassion. We can teach those skills to patients to help them become more emotionally resilient, or practice them ourselves to enhance the continuity of empathic connection in therapy. A key element in mindfulness-oriented psychotherapy is self-compassion—opening to our own emotional difficulties with kindness, rather than criticizing or blaming ourselves when things go wrong. Since mindfulness is a visceral, non-conceptual experience, this day-long program will be an ‘educational retreat’—weaving talks, meditation, clinical vignettes, research, and discussion. Special emphasis will be given to the art of loving-kindness (metta) meditation. |
