Mind Body Medicine: Components, Research, Techniques and Applications with the Emphasis on the Relaxation Response

Date: Friday, June 12, 2009
Time: 8:45 am - 4:30 pm
Program No: MS29
CE Credits: 6 (CE/CME Credits)
Tuition: See table above
Instructor: Herbert Benson, M.D.
Ann Webster, Ph.D.
Location: MSPP
Description: Health care is changing. The new model, often referred to as mind/body medicine, states clearly that the causes, development and outcomes of an illness are determined by the interaction of biochemistry and physiology with psychological, social and cultural factors. Yet most health care providers do not communicate with their patients about these issues nor do they understand mind/body medicine interventions. This program, which will be both didactic and experiential, will focus on understanding the foundation of mind/body medicine, the role of stress in illness, recent research advances, and techniques and applications. Participants will have an opportunity to experience several mind/body medicine approaches such as: the relaxation response; cognitive restructuring; stress management; ‘minis’; and humor, all of which enhance resiliency and well-being. Participants will understand the application of these techniques to various health issues such as: cancer, chronic pain, HIV/AIDS, insomnia and successful aging. Participants will also learn the language and the ‘how to’ for integrating mind/body techniques into their practices and into their own daily lives.
