| Description: |
A diagnosis of cancer begins a process that can best be described as a psychosocial roller coaster for patients and their families. Diagnosis, treatment, post-treatment effects and adjustment, reoccurrences and end of life, all present unique challenges. In this workshop, the impact of living with cancer at each point on the continuum of the experience will be presented. Interventions which address the needs of patients and mitigate the unwelcome effects will be discussed. Integrating interventions into an already established psychotherapeutic relationship, as well as embarking on a new relationship with a cancer patient will be explored, as will the resources available in the community and how to make appropriate referrals. |
