| Description: |
This advanced level training class will focus on therapists developing fined tuned skills for dealing with specific couples therapy issues. Each class will include a specific topic, a case study and a specific therapeutic approach. A ‘real couple’ will be presented to the class and students will work with the couple conducting a therapy session. The ‘real couple’ will be either played by students in the class, actors or colleague therapists. The class will act as a reflecting team in the following ways: they will support the student(s) being the therapist (s) through feedback and suggestions during the therapy session and/ or they may step in as the therapist at times. At times the instructor will also act as the therapist demonstrating certain approaches or strategies. Prior to the role play, the class will discuss the case, the primary issue to be studied and strategies for treatment. Suggested readings will give background on the issue for the session. After the role play, the class will debrief the therapy and discuss the issues and strategies that emerged in the ‘session’. Other relevant case examples including those from students will also be discussed. In addition the therapist’s experience and counter transference will be a central part of each class. The approach of the course will be phenomenological. Primary emphasis will be placed on what happens in the room during the couples sessions. This program meets for 8 sessions of 2 hours each, and is designed for practitioners who have a masters degree in a mental health field and who have had experience doing couples therapy. |
