The Clinical Implications of Attachment Theory

Date: Friday, June 4, 2010
Time: 1:00 - 5:00 pm
Program No: AT45
CE Credits: 4
Tuition: $85
Instructor: Steven Krugman, Ph.D. and Nancy Lundy, Ph.D.
Location: MSPP
Description: Attachment Theory, based in developmental research, is a radically intersubjective "model of mind and self." While not a clinical theory per se, a number of powerful clinical treatment models and methods based on attachment theory have emerged. Once a step-child of psychoanalysis, in the last decade a powerful convergence of ideas and interests have brought these two approaches to human growth and developmental into dialogue. The program will discuss approaches to treating borderline personality disorders, dissociative disorders, and character disorders. We will review the work of Peter Fonagy, Alan Batemen, Beatrice Beebe and Frank Lachman, Karlin Lyons-Ruth, and David Wallin. We will develop a perspective on the psychotherapeutic value of contemporary attachment concepts such as secure base, breakdown and repair, scaffolding, and mentalization.
