| Description: |
Alzheimer’s Disease represents an emerging dominant challenge in the healthcare landscape and an increasing focus of many films. Currently 5.2 million Americans are living with the disorder at an annual estimated cost of $148 billion. The number will dramatically swell as 10 million baby boomers will be effected and by 2050 between 11.3 and 16 million Americans will have Alzheimer’s. The movie industry has not missed these facts and has generated a significant number of films about Alzheimer’s. This day-long program looks at Alzheimer’s both in terms of its clinical realities and it cinematic portrayal. We will see in detail some of the major Alzheimer’s movies: On Golden Pond, Iris, Away from Her, The Notebook, Driving Miss Daisy and A Song for Martin. We will evaluate these depictions in light of current understandings, knowledge and treatments. The program taken together provides a comprehensive picture of Alzheimer’s experience for the individual and their families. |
