Description: We will discuss coping with sources of primary stress over the lifespan, including transitional age/stage tasks requiring new perceptual, emotional and behavioral learning; and specific life events that disrupt personal equilibrium such as serious illness, separations, losses, economic problems from loss of work and/or home, school or domestic violence, and caretaking responsibilities. Individual responses to stress, negative, mixed or positive, require careful assessment. When the client perceives the stress as overwhelming and coping too difficult, therapy sessions often need to include biopsychosocially-based resources for building more resilient coping strategies.
