Instructor Biography

Amaro Laria, PhD

Bio: Amaro J. Laria, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist with primary expertise in culture and mental health, and behavioral medicine. He has been on the faculty at Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP) in Boston since 2003 where he teaches Cross-Cultural Psychology, Latino Mental Health, and Clinical Hypnosis. He is founder and director of the "Medical Consultation and Multicultural Competence Training Program," an internship housed at the Joseph M. Smith Community Health Center in Allston and Waltham that involves specialty training in primary care mental health and multicultural competence. He is also founder and director of the Dr. Cynthia Lucero Latino Mental Health Training Program, a program that trains mental health professionals in the provision of linguistically and culturally competent services to Latinos in the USA. The program features a summer immersion program for language training and volunteer mental health work in Costa Rica and Ecuador. Dr. Laria also holds a faculty appointment as clinical instructor in the Department of Psychiatry and lecturer in the Department of Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School. His primary research involvement has been in the area of culture and mental health, in particular Latino mental health. His most recent publication is titled Issues in the Assessment and Treatment of Latino Patients (in Clinical Manual of Cultural Psychiatry edited by R. Lim, American Psychiatric Publishing, 2006). Dr. Laria also has a private practice in Brookline.
