Marjorie Kettell, Ph.D., has been interested in geriatrics since being a member of an interdisciplinary, NIMH-sponsored team studying geriatric hospitalization at Boston State Hospital and then her doctoral project, "Ego Functions In Old Age" (1966). After independent practice with children and younger adults, she returned to work with the aged as a nursing home diagnostic and case management consultant with American Geriatric Services. Academic interests have been a second track. After serving as a founder and faculty member of MSPP, she became a student and research faculty member at the Boston Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. "Ageism" and transference/countertransference issues are an integration of these two fields. Understanding these phenomena proves to be a challenging new area for practitioners in all phases of helping older people more effectively. |
